Abstract |
The present Bachelor paper Limitations and Possibilities in the Translation of Technical Texts (in the Field of Banking) written by Edgars Voilaks, student of the Higher Professional Education program Technical Translation Riga Technical University comprises the results of the research of the concepts of norms,limitations and possibilities in the Translation Studies, specifically, in rendering technical literature. It is one of the most topical issues in the translation theory and practice as it deals both with the so-called invisibility of the translator and his/her creativity in making reliable solutions. The author of the paper highlights the most essential approaches to these concepts, also on the basis of rendering an English source text (ST) on banking into Latvian and providing comparative examples from the source text (ST) and target text (TT).
The Bachelor paper consists of the abstract, introduction, the theoretical part, the practical part translation of the ST into Latvian, conclusion, bibliography and appendices which include glossaries of terms, abbreviations and the ST in English. The ST is taken from the book by Alistair Milne. The Fall of the House of Credit. Published in the United States of America by Cambridge University Press, New York; 2009. The book explains the authors individual standpoint on the causes of the global banking and financial crisis, its origins and impact. It also characterizes the most typical banking operations, money markets, new financial instruments to overcome the crisis. The book is written for a general, not specialist audience, Nevertheless, it includes numerous terms in economy/banking which posed professional challenges for the translator the author of the present Bachelor paper.
The bibliography comprises 22 books, 5 online dictionaries and 9 other online resources.
Besides, the author of the present paper has tried to achieve an appropriate, adequate conversion of the ST into Latvian by putting into practice his background knowledge in the field of economy/banking, the available online and off-line resources on the topic of the research, his expertise in the Translation Studies and technical translation. |
