| Abstract |
The author of this Bachelor Paper is Everita Baure. The theme of the Bachelor Paper is Cross-Cultural Aspects in Technical Translation.
This Paper researches the cross-cultural aspects that concern technical texts to define the main strategies on how to translate them. The paper is divided into two components. The first part of the Paper concentrates on cross-cultural aspects in technical translation and ways of resolving problems that they may raise, and the second part is the translation of the source text.
The first chapter of the theoretical part researches English texts that contain cultural references which cannot be directly translated into Latvian. The Paper is continued with presenting the main strategies on how the translator can deal with cultural references from which it was concluded that a universal method that could be used to translate cultural references does not exist. The third chapter is the analysis of the source text.
To develop the theoretical part, analysis of theoretical literature, textual analysis, and study of parallel texts have been useful.
The practical part consists of the translation of a text in the field of telecommunications. In this case, the source text concerns the fourth generation mobile systems. To develop the practical part, results of theoretical research, work with dictionaries and databases have been used.
The paper consists of 108 pages. There are two tables included to better present the information.
To develop the paper, 25 sources of a printed nature and 7 Internet sources have been used.
Three appendices have been added consisting of 104 pages: Appendix I is the Glossary of Terminology with 156 terms and phrases, Appendix II is the List of Abbreviations with 121 items, and Appendix III is the source text. |
