| Abstract |
The automotive industry today is fast paced. Efficiency is vital, and Just-In-Time manufacturing has been a cornerstone of lean production methods. This thesis explores how integrating Advanced Robotics and Automation (ARA) into the automotive industry’s Just-in-Time (JIT) manufacturing systems affects material flow, waste reduction and production dynamics. A literature review establishes the theoretical foundation, with a focus on how Just-In-Time manufacturing has evolved over time and how Advanced Robotics and Automation are used in today’s industrial manufacturing.
To assess the impact of ARA, this thesis takes on a simulation-based approach in an effort to compare JIT manufacturing operations with and without ARA integration. This comparison focuses on key performance indicators (KPIs) such as throughput, cycle times, Work-in-progress and consistency of work. The findings of the study show that while ARA comes with a plethora of advantages to JIT manufacturing, like increasing the throughput by almost 400%, in the automotive industry, integrating ARA into manufacturing systems is not a small challenge. Technological limitations, workforce skill issues, and financial burden are some of these challenges.
Finally, the thesis concludes with practical recommendations made based on the findings. By investigating how companies can better bridge the gap between traditional JIT manufacturing and Industry 4.0 and 5.0 technologies, this thesis seeks to provide valuable insights to entities looking to increase productivity while remaining lean, in this automated world. The wholeness of the thesis is contained in 101 pages, which includes 29 figures in the main body, 18 figures as appendices, 13 tables, and 100 references to external sources.
