Abstract |
This study explores the fundamental concept of terminology and its role in the analysis of technical texts. The research aims to analyse previous definitions of a term, identify their weaknesses and inconsistencies, and derive a new definition that can serve as a practical theoretical tool for analysing technical texts. The study involves a literature review, historical analysis of terminology as a discipline, examination of economic terminology in English and Ukrainian languages, and a case study analysis of a technical text and its translation. The hypothesis posits that a term should be defined as a monosemous word or fixed set of words used in specific contexts and recognized as such by a particular group of people. The paper concludes by acknowledging the new definition's limitations and the need for further development in the field of terminology studies. The research contributes to resolving past issues and presents a promising theoretical tool for analysing technical texts and terminology. |
