Abstract This thesis gives real insights into electric power in AC circuits, power factor correction techniques and carrier frequency modulation, as well as deals with the use of switching frequency modulation (SFM) in mixed conduction mode (MCM) power factor correctors (PFC). MCM is combination of discontinuous and continuous conduction modes. The effect of SFM on the main characteristics (e.g. total harmonic distortion (THD), power factor, electromagnetic interference reduction, etc.) of the boost PFC operating in MCM is studied in details in the thesis. The MCM PFC converter is studied by using experiments. Finally, performance of MCM PFC with SFM is compared to the performance of MCM PFC without SFM. The thesis gives useful information to effectively apply SFM technique to PFCs operating in MCM.
