Abstract INTRODUCTION Banking is of paramount importance for the country and its people. It has aided growing many important sectors. Banking has converted the ambitions and aspirations of many people into reality. However for that, it had to control and suffers the indignities of foreign rule. Currently Indian banks can strongly compete with other banks anywhere in the world. In India banking sector commenced in the final decade of 18th century. One of the first bank was the General Bank of India and Bank of Hindostan set up in 1786 and 1770 respectively. In 1829-32 Bank of Hindostan was liquidated and General Bank of India hit bottom in 1791. The State bank of India is one of the oldest and still in work. It was created as the Bank of Calcutta in june 1806. Again it was renamed as Bank of Bengal in 1809. It was one of the 3 banks funded by the presidency government. The other 2 was Bank of Madras and Bank of Bombay. In 1921 all 3 banks was joined and created an imperial bank of India and after independence in 1955 it was named state bank of India. In India Central banking institution controls the monetary policy, and is also the reserve bank of India. It started its work on 1st April 1935 at the time of British rule with the provision of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934. The RBI acts as significant role in the development strategy of the government of India and is an member of Asian clearing union. The central idea in the core of this thesis is the analyzing of credit risk measurements methods and to understand which of the methodologies can be applied better for the Indian banking sector with investigation of credit risk there will be find the best ways to avoid potential risk.
